Pinehurst Trip
Last week I met Mr and Mrs Archibald in Pinehurst, North Carolina. I managed to arrive at the clubhouse just in time to see the leaders start the back nine. It was sad to see Jordan Spieth on the 12th hole but I would not be too worried for him, he will win lots of golf tournaments and Majors in future years. I don't think he will be dwelling on the duff chip too much and will be back to his brilliant but very SLOW self very soon. The best thing about watching Danny Willet winning his first Major was being in America and having to explain who he was to all the Americans! My thoughts from the event are:
Danny Willet reminded me of Ian Poulter the way he was strutting around.
If Lee Westwood could hole four foot putts he would have won 10 majors.
Jordan Spieth and Jason Day are just too slow.
Bernard Langer could still play in the Ryder Cup, however is he still anchoring?
Lizzie Smith picks better golfers to bet on in the Masters then Gregg Smith!
Finally who has played Augusta? Let me know and any stories if you have that we can add next week.
Back to the real reason we were in Pinehurst, to play a 54 hole Pro-Am!
The team consisting of David Archibald, Kathryn Archibald and Stewart Smith got off to great start on day one and were 10 under after eight holes, things were going great until Pinehurst number four bit us back on the back nine. We finished at -11 for the day and came second on the day sweep. I finished on a one-under-71 and was tied for the lead after day one, I was four under at the turn though!
Day two was played on the fairly new Pinehurst number eight and was a lot tougher on the Bermuda greens, the team again finished in second place and I shot two over and slipped back to second in the pro event.
The final day was played on the famous Pinehurst number two, Martin Kaymer won in 2014 here and the course played at 7495 yards and was a par 70. The course has been reverted to its original condition with all the rough removed and sandy waste areas lining the fairways. We had another solid ball striking day as a team but unfortunately like the day before we holed no putts at all on the Bermuda greens. The team finished at -17 total which was good enough for third place and I finished at +3 total which was tied for second.
It was a fantastic trip and the hosts John and Alison have been organising Pro-Ams in the USA for over 20 years. I can 100% recommend them and if any would like to go away with myself, Gregg or Chris then click here for more information.
