Farewell to William (Bill) Harris
Last week was the funeral of Bill Harris, Bill was a Past Captain and President of the Club. He instigated the Pro-Am and was a huge supporter of local charities including St. Clares Hospice where his late wife Pat past away. Bill was a straight shooter, but would always listen in an argument and sometimes I even got him to change his mind on some occasions. We had a lovely drink at the funeral and raised a glass to Bill. I can imagine the mischief that Jack Watts, David Quinney and Bill are having at the moment.
I'm sorry if this image offends anyone in anyway, but this is the cantankerous William Harris I remember, and that cheeky smile.
East Herts' Members on Tour
Last week the European Seniors tour played at Hanbury Manor. The event was the second biggest prize fund on the Seniors' Tour, and was run in conjunction with the Willow Charity. We had East Herts' connections everywhere, from the Main Sponsor Duncan Sinclair and Corporate Sponsor Steve Blight and Bob Weston. We also had Olympian Peter Cattell, Shop Assistant Ashley Smith, Club President John Watts, past member John Pyle and soon to be Professional Chris Foster all playing in the Pro-Am event.
Professionals played their own ball all three days and the winner was Gary Marks from England. The amateurs played with the professionals on all three days in a better ball format also. Chris Foster won the Saturday format playing with the eventual winner Gary who shot -9 (63). In second place on Saturday was our very own Ashley Smith who played with Peter Fowler form Australia, they finished -10 better ball.
The overall team winner of the Pro-Am for the three days was Stephen Blight. Stephen has been working hard on his game this year and congratulations to him on some great golf during the week. He was cheered on most days by Robert Lorenzini and it was so nice to see all the East Herts' members up there during the week, even during the bad weather.
Past member Terry Hatt was at the event all week as a volunteer Physio for all the amateur players. I managed to pay him a visit due to having a really sore neck and back pains. Terry is currently based at Puckeridge with Mike Varney and I can definitely recommend him. Contact 01920 821452 or click here to visit his website.
Herts Open success for Daniel and a trip to the Belfry...
Congratulations to Head Professional, Daniel Field, who scored 74 and 68 at Harpenden GC and came third overall in the Hertfordshire Open. Daniel was beaten by Bobby Bradford and Charlie Wilkinson of Cheshunt Park but had the best Professional score of the day and won the top prize money of £500. This means that Daniel remains top of the Herts Order of Merit with four events left to play. The next event is at East Herts on Tuesday, 11 October and will hopefully see Chris Foster making his Professional debut. Click here for more information on the Herts PGA.
Daniel was also part of the winning qualifying team for Hertfordshire in the Inter County Professional Championships. The final will be played at the Belfry on Tuesday, 18 October and Wednesday, 19 October. Click here for the story which can be found in the PGA magazine. The team are looking for a potential sponsor for the week of around £400, this would cover the cost of the trip and for the sponsor it would include a company logo on the team kit and entry into a Herts Alliance for a team at a course of their choice with a Pro of their choice, if available.
