Captain's Week

Congratulations to our Captain Mr Alan Thomas on hosting a fantastic week in Bulgaria. I genuinely think I would struggle to find three golf courses of that quality so close together in the whole of Europe. The Black Sea Rama on the first day was probably in the best condition and had some fantastic holes, especially the last three. The last was a 225 yard par three over a huge ravine, I think only Andy Kendrick made three there all day and that was with a driver off the tee.

My favourite of the week and visually the best I've seen in Europe was Thracian Cliffs where we played Bob Cornish's Vice Captain's Day. I foolishly accepted the challenge of playing from the Championship tees which were even further back than the black tees. The combined distance on the first two holes, from my tee to Alan's tee who I played with, was 380 yards. There was a par three that was 275 yards with a couple of hundred feet drop and one tee that was actually in the ocean! Whilst carefully navigating the course in the buggy we often kept using words like, wow, amazing, stunning, and awesome and is this unreal!

Our Captain managed to have 43 points around Thracian Cliffs and when you consider his warm up balls all ended up in one little area on the right hand side of the practice ground (don't say that word) it was an unbelievable performance. Even when he got a little excited and started hearing every noise he still managed to hole some great putts. It really was a lovely day playing with Alan, Dave Morten and John Tass and one I will remember for a very long time. I manged to shoot +1 which is by far the best I played all week, I even started to have delusions of grandeur half-way round about going on tour.

The final Captain's Day was played around the Lighthouse Course, which was attached to our Resort. Our best scores on the day were from Philip Greenwold who shot a very impressive 41 points (and was feeling poorly for the most of the week) and Eric Brown with 40 points. Both players off slightly higher handicaps then they started with. The two best players during the week were David Gaillard with a 128 points total and John Tass with 131 points total. Congratulation to both players on very steady golf. I played with John twice and can definitely recommend he should be off at least 17, he was like a machine off the tee and a hoover around the greens.

There were a few funny stories, a few too many double Brandys at 3.30pm, but all the good stuff stays on tour. Thank you again Alan and good luck next year Mr Cornish.

 

Short Game Masterclass' Return!

Gregg is running Five Short Game Masterclasses throughout October and November. Each three hour course will included chipping, putting and bunkers and will be open to six people per class. Dates are as follows:

• Thursday, 27 October - 9:00am - 12:00pm
• Friday, 28 October - 1:00pm - 4:00pm
• Tuesday, 8 November - 9:00am - 12:00pm
• Monday, 21 November - 10:00am - 2:00pm

Junior Roll-up Class Every Saturday!
