The Fabian Trophy
On Friday at Berkhamsted Golf Club, myself and East Herts members Steve Jackson, Liam Munt and Gavin McFayden took part in the Herts PGA event "The Fabian Trophy". The format for the team was best two scores from the four of us in stableford scoring. We started off fairly steady with pars on the first few holes and then a chip-in birdie by Liam got things moving along a little better on the par three fifth hole. Steve then birdied the sixth hole and also made two further birdies including the last. I managed to hole a few monster putts on the ninth and 10th and up and downed it from 250 yards on the 16th hole for birdie after my second shot hit a tree and went back 40 yards. We had some fun with Gavin because he failed to have a birdie, but without his nett birdies and steady pars we would have never have been in the running.
Our team score of 86 points was good enough to take the win on countback, and as you can see we are extremely proud to bring such a beautiful trophy back to East Herts. Gavin and Liam had an old Hertfordian's dinner and the trophy took pride of place on the table all night, along with some others random places. To top things off for me, I managed to shoot 69 and win the Professional event by one shot. This leaves me currently leading the Herts PGA Order of Merit (click here to see the current standings). Our events will start up again in October with the Herts PGA and if anyone would like to join myself, Gregg or Chris then please click here to get in touch.
What's in the bag for the new season?
Ever wondered what's in my bag for the 2017 season? Well look no further...
- Driver - New PING G Series 9 degree (Set at 8.4 with stiff shaft).
- 3-wood - New Titleist 917 15 degree with Stiff Fujikura shaft.
- 2-iron - PING Rapture.
- 4 - PW - PING i irons.
- 50, 55 and 60 wedges - PING Anser.
- Putter - New PING Anser W Cadence TR.
- Ball - New Titleist Pro V1.
- Shoes - New Sketchers and FootJoy Pro/SL.
- Glove - New FootJoy CabrettaSof.
- Bag - PING Moon Bag / 4 Under Series.
Improvements for this year are:
New Driver - It's taken seven years to replace my trusty G20. The new G has the same shaft, but I get a much better, more penetrating flight with it. This should lead to more fairways due to the new technology and better distance through the flight. Click here to learn more.
3-Wood - This club has scared me a little this year. The Titleist 917 with the adjustable weights in the head is the reason I had to improve my driver. This thing can fly 280, but you can also take a bit off and shape it. I've currently got the demo in my bag and there's no way anyone's getting it back... Click here to learn more.
Putter - The Cadence TR Series have small grooves in the face of the putter which improves the roll of the ball, this along with the extra weight on the answer W model in the head and the grip has made this putter really solid from close in but also great from down town (So far so good). Sketchers Shoes and the new FootJoy Pro/SL - The Sketchers are the most comfortable golf shoe I have ever worn! I just leave them on all day now and use them as work shoes also. I'm really pleased we decided to replace ECCO with Sketchers as they also retail between £80 to £100 cheaper. I have also been wearing and trying the new Pro/SL which you will see most Tour Professionals wearing. They are also extremely comfortable and stable and that's probably why the likes of Adam Scott and Justin Thomas are wearing them. They also come in lots of different styles and colours which is probably why Ian Poulter is wearing them. Click here to learn more.
New Pro V1 - I have used the Pro V1x since it came out and never felt the need to change, but after learning more about the new ball I decided to go for the Pro V1. My ball normally launches very high, but this new ball has really helped with getting more of a rainbow flight. It also feels great around the greens and I've found it to be a little more durable than the old ball. If you are unsure what ball you should be using then drop us an email here or pop in for a tea or coffee and a catch up.
Next week Gregg will take you through what's in his bag for this year.
