Captain's Week A great trip was has by all down in Bournemouth last week for Bob Cornish's Captain's week. Day one took place at the Barton-on-Sea and was won by the impressive Collin Pullen and erratic Bob Cinnamon with a stunning score of 49 points. The format was fourball betterball and Andy Kendrick and Alan Thompson must have thought they had cleaned up with 46 points. The course was really nice with stunning views of the Isle of White, however the greens had been recently spiked which made putting a little hard work. Alan Julian, Vice Captain Michael Benjamin and I ventured into town that night to watch the mighty Arsenal beat West Brom, we ate in a classy establishment that had the football on and was £5 for a meal including a pint.
Day two was won around Bulbery Woods by Robert Lorenzini and I. The format was hidden pairs and the runners-up were Eric Brown and our oldest and by far the wisest traveller Robert Browning, I had the pleasure of Robert's company that day and the highlight was his second chip in from off the green that went over a bunker through an Irishman and hit the flag a good speed to drop in. We also ventured back to the same quality establishment for a pint and food for a fiver and this time watched the Harry Kane show in Europe. Day three was played at Isle of Purbeck which is a stunning course with spectacular views and was Captain's day. The winner on countback and also second overall for the week was once again Collin Pullen, not surprisingly the only man to be more consistent was Alan Thompson. I can’t remember a Captain's week when Alan was not the best player of the week and is one of the steadiest 10 handicap golfers I’ve ever played with. You really want to give him some stick but you can’t, because he is such a nice guy! Second on countback was Graham Fry and third was Jeff Winter.
During the course of the week I was in charge of handicaps and I was extremely generous with some of the shots back, if anyone was upset about that then I apologise, however it was all worth it to see Robert Browning picking up a prize on day two even if he was off a 35 handicap. Well done to Captain Bob on a great few days away and thank you to all that came and supported him.
