The Royal Links Challenge
Last week East Herts Golf Club had two teams enter the Royal Links Challenge down in Sandwich Bay and Deal. The two teams consisted of:
East Herts 1 - Daniel Field, Michael Benjamin (8), Gavin McFayden (7), and David Warburton (7).
East Herts 2 - James Watts, Stephen Blight (9), John Watts (7), and Barry Hume (+3). |
Day one was played at the stunning Royal St Georges Golf Club, I have been lucky enough to walk the course in 2009 and again at the 2011 Open Championship but had never actually played the course, one of the best experiences of my golfing life was in 2011 around St Georges when Tom Lewis won the Silver Medal.
Myself and Fiona were actually standing on the putting green with Tom and his family when Darren Clarke received the Claret Jug.
Unfortunately, the course got the better of me and I dropped two shots on each side, James however fared much better, striking the ball effortlessly in the breeze to shoot a very impressive 68 -2 and tie the lead on day one. James team also had the best team score with -13 and held a one shot lead after the first day.

Day two was played around The Shore course and the newly redesigned Himalayas course at Prince’s Golf Club.
The new designed nine at Prince’s is fantastic and now means they have 27 stunning golf holes along with a superb clubhouse and Dormy house, it’s a great place to visit and I would definitely recommend the area. The crosswinds around Prince’s which traditionally goes out then back in make it a great test, but the fairways are a little easier and scoring was better for the professionals.
I even managed -1 and James extended his lead with another fantastic round of -3. The teams tied on -9 and East Herts 2 were a couple off the lead going into the final day at Royal Cinque Ports.

The final day at Cinque Ports was tough, tough because we had gone out for dinner and had the odd drink each night, tough because the wind got up and tough because Royal Cinque Ports is bloody hard. It’s a fantastic venue and like the other two courses has held The Open Championship on more than one occasion. The majority of the course heads away from the clubhouse until you get about halfway then you turn back. We started on the 10th hole which meant that holes 12-18 were played into a very strong wind. Strong as in all the par 4s were Driver, driver and the par 3 was also driver. It did mean however that the front nine played downwind.
Barry Hume who is a caddy at Loch Lomond and a Scottish international golfer was -7 after the first 11 holes, he managed to finish the round on -4 which would have won the Pro prize by four shots. I was very pleased with level par and the team fought back from plus five at one point to end at -3.

The stars of the week though were East Herts 2, we might upgrade them to one next year! They managed -9 around Royal Cinque Ports to finish the week on -33 in second place and two behind the eventual winners. James finished with a 72, plus one on the last round to tie for the win and gave a lovely speech. He was also presented for the inaugural time with the East Herts Golf Club Professionals Trophy, which will be played for whenever a past or current member or member of staff play professionally. It was a most enjoyable week in all, we had accommodation that was found on Air BNB which was in Sandwich Bay and some of our teams stayed in Sandwich which is where we ate each night. I would totally recommend the area and if anyone fancies doing something similar with any of the East Herts Professionals then please do get in touch with us.

The importance of custom fitting This game is hard enough so why use equipment that is working against you? There are so many factors to a golf club that will affect how the club is delivered to the ball at impact and it would be naive to assume that you’re standard off the shelf just because you are an average golfer. |
Here at East Herts we understand the importance of having your clubs set up correctly for you as an individual. We see far too many golfers using equipment that isn’t suited to them.
With our excellent knowledge, understanding and the aid of SkyTrak we can fit you for clubs that will not only make you feel much more comfortable over the golf ball but will improve your golf drastically. We currently offer fittings for TaylorMade and PING equipment, with a FREE OF CHARGE appointment.

An ace week for Master Eddie The British Masters took place at Walton Heath in Surrey last week and was hosted by the local favourite, Justin Rose. The tournament had a stark weather contrast from start to finish with conditions declining and making it a real grind for the players. The caddies were certainly tested during the final round trying to keep their players warm and dry. It was a day of umbrellas, waterproofs and wearing the correct layering, which at this time of year can help or hinder your round. The tournament winner was Eddie Pepperell who dealt with the conditions the best and led from start to finish to claim a two-shot victory. Eddie’s highlight of the week was his impressive hole-in-one on Thursday at the ninth hole, earning £20,000 for charity and a celebratory bottle of wine from the tournament host. Pepperell now moves up to 33rd in the world rankings and with it an invite to next year’s biggest tournaments including his first trip to The Masters at Augusta. If you need help layering up this winter then contact me here. |

When you step onto the tee with a driver in hand, there are two thoughts in most golfers' minds: "Hit it far, and hit it straight". Both of these were easier said than done, until Titleist released its new TS2 and TS3 drivers earlier this year... |
Both of these drivers are designed to bring more speed to your game, which results in greater distance. It's as simple as that. The Titleist TS2 is all about forgiveness. In fact, it has the highest MOI that Titleist has ever produced, which means it's more resistant to twisting at impact, for longer and straighter shots. However, if you have a consistent miss with your drives, the TS3 will be perfect for you as we can set it up to counter your destructive shot. With two models to choose from, it's more important than ever to come and see us for a custom fitting. What numbers will you be putting up on the Titleist board? |
