Club news

Woburn

Thank you to the 100 of you that came to Woburn Golf Club last Tuesday, we had a scorching hot day and a fantastic time was had by all. The winning score was 39 points by Brad Davey, whilst the winning team was led by one of my old work colleagues Matthew Larman.

We had four teams from Knebworth Golf Club, two from Mill Green, and a few from Essendon and Brickenden. Our ‘Nearest the Pin in Two’ winner was Peter Button and ‘Longest Drive in Two’ on 18 was John Watts; he hit driver, 3 wood to get there.

Hole in ones

Massive congratulations to Trish Lather who achieved a Hole in One on the 17th at Hadley Wood in a Ladies friendly on Thursday, 29 August.

It was recognised by Hadley Wood, with the Ladies Captain presenting Trish with a certificate and a ball marker. Well done Trish.

Four days earlier on Saturday, 24 August. Peggy Nicolson achieved a Hole in One on the 15th at EHGC. Congratulations and well-done Peggy.

Junior news

Junior Academy Members take on the Under 14’s County Championship

Four of our EHGC Academy members played in the Hertfordshire County Under 14’s Championship last Sunday at Mid Herts Golf Club.

Stanley Hennessy (13 and playing off 18), Alfie Moy (12 and off 18), Dylan Hayes (12 and off 27) and Austin Cook (12 and off 26) all played some great golf on the tight, fiddly course. Austin lost on countback in the Under 12’s division.

It’s fantastic to see our Junior section growing and getting some county-wide recognition. Well done boys!

We have some places available for our EHGC Academy which starts back up tomorrow (Saturday, 7 September) which is suitable for children of 4 – 14 years. If you are interested in getting a budding young golfer into our program please contact us.

Custom fit at Titleist

Tuesday this week I went to the National Fitting Centre at St Ives to try some new Titleist irons. I’ve had my PING E irons for about six years now and feel I needed a change. I was looking for an iron that would help me work the ball more and maintain the distance and accuracy.

I ended up settling on the new T100 irons from 5-PW and a 3 and 4 iron in the new 500 utility series. I also tried the new concept iron which went 10 yards further than anything and was incredible, but it actually went too far! And at £500 a stick was a bit out of my price range.

The whole experience was excellent and I have attached the info in the link of my TrackMan results. Click here to view. I’m hoping these clubs will help me secure a good finish at the end of this month when I take a team to Scotland for the Highland links Pro-AM.

Why the recent surge?

Here’s some homework for you: the next time you're watching golf on TV, keep an eye on the number of pros using putters with larger heads. Whilst some golfers still prefer the traditional blade style putters from years gone by, over 60% of PGA Tour players have a larger headed putter in their bag today – the question is: why?

High MOI putters

These are all to do with stability, feel and alignment. When you take a look at Scotty Cameron's Phantom X 12 and 6 models (pictured above) you will see what we mean.

The larger head style of both putters is designed to increase MOI, which is crucial as it means the putter face will twist less at impact, especially when struck away from the sweet spot.

How do they work?

It's all to do with the additional weight in the extremities of the head when compared to traditional blade style putters, which helps to keep the face stable through impact.
