Scratch Team Update Hi everyone at East Herts golf club this is Mark Lewis scratch team captain with my review of the scratch team’s season. I've run the team for a couple of years now and had 1 successful year helping Ken Hayes win Division 4 a few years back. Last year was really hard to get a team out for games but this year what with some new members joining the club and some other members of the club making themselves available the job of captain has not been so bad. We started our season with a Thornton cup game over at Epping, we were up in the morning and unfortunately lost in the afternoons singles to go out. We were entered in the plate which is 5 players at home and 5 away we saw James Marshall play his 1st scratch match along with his dad also we saw John Watts play scratch golf for a 5th century for the club. We won through this round to play Toot Hill we won our 5 home games but lost our 5 away which went down to games won and we, unfortunately, hadn't won as many as them. I think we have had a fairly good season competing well in all the games we have played. I feel there is a more positive vibe this year with new members Harry Tweedy, Justin Bygraves, Tommy Baker, Robert Woolston, Lee Bruce and Gary Crumlish being a big part of that. Also, we have drawn on players who probably don’t want to play scratch but have been there when needs be i.e. Phil Swan and Nick Roberts all these have picked up pts when been called upon. In this next year, we feel as a team that we shall be pushing for team kit so when we play our matches the team can feel like a team in representing East Herts golf club. We may be looking for some sponsorship to help with this. I feel a proud person to be captain of our scratch team but my aim is to have a solid squad of players willing and wanting to play for the club. I feel we have some good younger players coming through the club, they may want to and be good enough to play and represent the club in the future. Underneath that Gregg and Ash are building a very good group of young players in the academy which will soon be pushing on as well and they should have a target of where and what the best golf they can play. I hope I haven't bored you too much and I would like to thank everyone who has helped me out this year and supported the team with their time or even just their interest of how we got on. Daniel has agreed to do some playing lessons with the scratch team and he will publish a few dates soon. Many thanks Mark Lewis |
