You may not know this but I've not been playing much or very good golf at all so far this year. I put my clubs away in November for nearly four months, something I've never done before, so the season has started very slow for me. Wentworth normally gives me the shot in the arm I need, so full of enthusiasm I went down on Wednesday to watch the Pro-Am and practice day. I've got to say I was let down, the range was like a circus, full of coaches talking nonsense and using ridiculous gadgets looking for the answer to the perfect golf swing (which does not exist by the way).
Thankfully Friday evening at The Buckinghamshire did the trick. Hannah Burke played in a celebrity nearest pin challenge with Dame Laura Davies, Mel Reid and Charlie Hull. From the celebrity world there was DJ Spooney, Vernon Kay, Mike Tindall and Carlo Cudicini. The players paired off and competed against each over in teams. It was fun and light hearted with lots and lots of banter, especially from Dame Laura who was brilliant. Mel Reid and Mike Tindall beat Hannah and DJ Spooney in the final, but Hannah managed to win the overall nearest the pin competition. On Saturday I was best man at the wedding of Stuart Smith who used to be the Caterer at East Herts. Stuart married Lucy Ross who's children are my god children. It was a wonderful day and the reception was held at Billings Restaurant in Buntingford which Stuart now owns and runs. The speech went down well and received many laughs, thankfully Stuart's was fairly bad so that helped to make me look good!
At the Club on Saturday we had the Centenary Greensomes Trophy and it was won by Rod Garland and David Bennett with 40 points. Runners up were Andy Kendrick and Duncan Woodcock (Andy must have played well). Special mention to John Lynch and Jason Haigh who managed to birdie three of the par threes to scoop £45 in the twos.
